New wind turbine will make Hanegal CO2 neutral
A new agreement on wind turbine power makes the production of organic cold cuts and ready meals at the factory in Haderslev super green and climate-friendly.
Hanegal, which produces organic and allergy-friendly cold cuts and ready meals, is the first food company to enter into a climate partnership with South Denmark-based energy company SE’s climate division, Big Blue. The collaboration means that as of next year, Hanegal can completely neutralise the climate impact from the production’s electricity consumption by using wind power.
At home in the role of “first mover”
For Fie Graugaard, who owns Hanegal alongside Ulrich Kern-Hansen, the role of front runner is not unfamiliar. “Hanegal has been at the front right from the beginning. We established the company because we wanted to help the environment and produce healthy, organic food. Now we are taking the next step by converting to climate-friendly energy”, says Fie Graugaard. Hanegal, which sells organic products to most Danish supermarkets, has long been looking for new solutions that might make production even more sustainable and climate-friendly. “The agreement ensures that we actually make a difference to the climate, and not just pay extra for electricity that we had access to anyway. The agreement guarantees that new wind turbines will be built. Hanegal is therefore helping to set a sustainable direction”, says Fie Graugaard.
New wind turbine saves 538 tonnes of CO2
The agreement between Hanegal and SE Big Blue goes back 10 years and is based on a completely new wind turbine that must first be erected and will be operational from 2013. The agreement means that Hanegal will get 1.5 million kWh each year from 2013 and for the next 10 years. The annual environmental impact will thus be reduced by a total of 538 tonnes of CO2.
Big Blue ensures a rapid transition
“All too often, wind power is marketed as green power without it actually being true. This means that companies risk paying extra for electricity from wind turbines, without any guarantee that more renewable energy will reach their power sockets. At SE Big Blue, we only offer additional up-front wind power, and no politicians have been involved in decisions about constructing the wind turbines that provide power to our climate partners. Our partnerships ensure a visible, distinct and individual impact on the climate. “We call them ‘Eco-warriors’”, says deputy director of SE, Rasmus Plougmann Laursen and continues: “They are the ones who will be tomorrow’s winners. Hanegal is a company that, despite its modest size, has shown impressive results in a time of economic crisis in the world around us. Therefore, it makes me proud to be able to count an ambitious company like Hanegal among our Big Blue Partners.”
